As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2025 came to a close, the Candlelighters team helped bring plenty of smiles, sparkle, and gold to families at Leeds Children’s Hospital. Throughout September, our Family Support Workers and Youth Support Worker have been busy organising special activities to mark the month and brighten days for children and families on the wards. These moments of fun not only help families feel connected during a difficult time, but also remind them that they are part of a much wider community standing together for childhood cancer awareness. Earlier in the month, our support team hosted a gold-themed tea party and a cupcake decorating session for teenagers and their parents. The homemade cakes were gifted to ward staff as a thank you for their care and support. For Candlelighters, these events are all about bringing a bit of brightness to families going through tough times. They give everyone a chance to relax, have fun, and feel part of something bigger… the global movement that turns the world gold for childhood cancer awareness every September. A big thank-you to our Family Support and Youth Support Workers for bringing so much warmth and care to families this September, and every month after.
One of the highlights of the month was a Golden Awards Ceremony, run with the hospital play team. Patients became presenters for the day, awarding certificates to parents, staff, and fellow patients in celebration of kindness, courage, and positivity. The room was full of laughter, and plenty of pizza to finish off the fun!
