How to leave a gift in your will
Whether you have an existing will or haven't ever made one, there are straightforward ways to leave a gift to Candlelighters.
- If you already have a will and would like to include a gift to Candlelighters, there are a couple of ways you can do this. The simplest way is to write a new will, which will make any previous wills void. You can also amend your will using something called a codicil. A codicil is a document used to make simple additions or amendments to an existing will. A solicitor will be able to advise you on how to create a codicil.
- To leave a gift to Candlelighters you must make a note in your will of our registered charity number (1045077) and our address: Candlelighters, 8 Woodhouse Square, Leeds LS3 1AD. Please ensure that when creating or amending a will, you seek proper legal advice.
- Use our free will writing service. We work with a carefully selected and accredited will-writing company called Bequeathed to help our supporters make a will. It's quick and easy and they will guide you through the whole process.

- When leaving a gift in your will, there is no minimum amount. You can even specify to donate whatever is left after all other gifts have been given. All donations, whatever the size, are very gratefully received.
- Unlike other gifts in wills, donations to charities are exempt from inheritance tax. You can also reduce the inheritance tax you might pay on the rest of your estate if you gift over 10% of the net amount to charity.
- You can leave a residuary gift, cash gift, or specific gift to charity in your will.
- Residuary gift - A share of your estate value e.g. 5%
- Cash gift - A fixed sum of money e.g. £1,000
- Specific gift - A particular item e.g. a piece of artwork.
Residuary gifts are the most valuable to us as unlike other gifts, they will not depreciate over time.
