Why leave a gift in your will to Candlelighters?

For over 50 years, Candlelighters has given the vital support children and families need to face childhood cancer. We receive no government funding, but have been able to help thousands of families thanks to kind support from people like you.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their life and the lives of those around them are changed forever. As well as giving immediate support, we're there for families for the long road ahead. Our services are there for as long as families need us, and we also fund research to give children and young people the chance of a better life.

Dedicated childhood cancer research to save and improve lives, now and long into the future.

"My wife Lauren and I have chosen to leave a gift in our will to Candlelighters. Since hearing about it, I've been moved by their work supporting children with cancer and their families. We wanted to help ensure this support continues to be there, and that research to improve young lives can continue. We're proud to know that our support now will make a difference long into the future for this amazing charity."

How to leave a gift in your will

Whether you have an existing will or not, leaving a gift to Candlelighters is simple. If you already have an existing will, you can:

  • Make a new will, which will make any previous wills void.
  • Amend your will using something called a codicil. A codicil is a document used to make simple additions or amendments to an existing will. A solicitor will be able to advise you on how to create a codicil.

To leave a gift to Candlelighters in your will, you must include our registered charity number (1045077) and our address: Candlelighters, 8 Woodhouse Square, Leeds LS3 1AD. Please ensure that when creating or amending a will, you seek proper legal advice.

Free will writing service

We also offer a free will writing service, through our carefully selected and accredited will-writing partner, MyIntent. They can help you to create a basic will, which would usually cost £249. Their process takes place online and includes a 30-minute telephone or video appointment with a legal professional.
The MyIntent online service includes legal advice. That means, as a minimum, you'll receive a free basic will that's adequate for your needs and protects your loved ones. Your advisor will act for you alone: not for Candlelighters or anyone else. Advice may also be provided on extra steps or additional services you should consider because they’re in your best interests or those of your estate or intended beneficiaries. You should read the MyIntent T&Cs for yourself.

If you're considering leaving a gift in your will to Candlelighters, you are in no way obliged to use our partner provider to do so. You can always source your own and any legal partner.

Did you know?

When leaving a gift in your will, there is no minimum amount. You can even specify to donate whatever is left after all other gifts have been given. We know that your family and loved ones will always come first in your will. Any donations, whatever the size, are very gratefully received.

Unlike other gifts in wills, donations to charities are exempt from inheritance tax. You can also reduce the inheritance tax you might pay on the rest of your estate if you gift over 10% of the net amount to charity.

You can leave a residuary gift, cash gift, or specific gift to charity in your will. A residuary gift is a share of your estate value e.g. 5% and has the benefit of not being eroded by inflation over time. A cash gift is fixed sum of money e.g. £1,000 and a specific gift is a particular item e.g. a piece of artwork.
