What is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month?
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) is an international campaign to raise awareness of childhood cancer throughout September. It's an opportunity to recognise the strength and bravery of the children and families we support, educate on the signs and symptoms, and share its impact on families.

Why CCAM matters
Every year in the UK around 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer. Although medical advances have saved many lives, childhood cancer remains one of the leading causes of death for children in the UK. Getting a diagnosis turns life upside down for families. While most people can recognise the emotional impact, many don’t know about the practical and financial implications involved too. During September, we highlight these critical issues and encourage people to help however they can – from spreading the word to raising funds for vital research and support.
Together, we can make a real difference for families who need it most.

How you can help
Raise awareness by:
- Wearing gold - Gold is the official colour of CCAM. Wear gold ribbons, T-shirts, or accessories and explain to others why you're doing it. You can get your Candlelighters-branded CCAM merch on our online shop!
- Social media - Use social media to share family stories, signs and symptoms and key information and encourage your network to learn more. Check what we're posting on our Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn accounts.
- Organising a community event - Host an awareness activity or a gold-themed event in your community to bring people together. Use our handy resources to get started.

Families - we'd like to help tell your stories during CCAM. Get in touch to take part.
Fundraising ideas
- Take part in the 150-mile challenge: Complete 150 miles throughout September by walking, running, cycling, swimming, or wheeling - a mile for each child diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire each year.
- Host a gold-themed event: From bake sales to charity runs, go gold! Invite your friends, family and colleagues to take part and donate.
- Through your business: Use CCAM to raise funds through your workplace or business. You could donate a percentage of sales, set up collection tins, and organise team fundraising activities.
- Donate: Simply donating to support our childhood cancer research and family support makes a huge impact.
