Candlelighters holds first Teenage and Young Adult peer support group

Charity news
Issy Jackson

We’re absolutely delighted to have hosted our first teenage and young adult peer support group!

At Candlelighters, we hold groups and events throughout the year for grandparents, parents, siblings and patients. This August, we were proud to host our first peer support group for the teenagers and young adults we support.

Peer support groups offer the unique opportunity to mee other people who just ‘get it’, because no one quite understands childhood cancer, like other people facing it. These groups are a safe space to meet other families affected by childhood cancer and spend time with people who really understand.

For our first group, we headed to Leeds Golf Centre for an afternoon of inclusive golf, led by professionals at the centre to ensure everyone could enjoy the session, build confidence and develop their golfing skills.

Afterwards, the afternoon continued over lunch, giving the young people the opportunity to catch up with each other and relax.

Peer support groups give young people a unique opportunity to connect with people their own age who can relate to their experiences, challenges, and how they are feeling. It’s a safe, judgement-free space, where young people can be themselves and really be understood.

This is an important milestone in the development of support available to young people we support as we celebrate our 50th year and we’re incredibly proud. As always, we remain committed to developing and enhancing the support young people and families need now and for many years to come.
