Refreshed look for the Radiotherapy department

20 Nov 2025
Charity news
Roz Walton

Children and young people undergoing cancer treatment at Leeds now have a brighter and more cheerful environment, thanks to a recent update to the Radiotherapy Department at St James’s Hospital.

While the department mainly serves adults, it includes a dedicated children’s and teenage area for patients aged 0–24 who need external beam radiotherapy. Located in the basement of Bexley Wing, these rooms were feeling outdated, clinical and uninviting, especially for families who may spend several hours a day there, up to five days a week, for as long as six weeks.

With the generous support of The Susie P Foundation, the paediatric areas have been refreshed with new vinyl wall designs, creating a more colourful, uplifting, and welcoming environment.

The new designs aim to reduce stress and anxiety, helping children feel more at ease during their treatment and making the space feel less medical and harsh.

Staff and families have already noticed the difference. The brighter, more cheerful surroundings provide a calming backdrop for children and young people, supporting both patients and play therapists as they prepare for and recover from treatment.

This work is part of a wider Candlelighters project to refresh and bring more colour and fun to the children’s Oncology wards and Day Unit at Leeds Children’s Hospital, continuing our mission to make long hospital stays as positive and supportive as possible.

Huge thanks to the Susie P Foundation for funding this important work!
