Supporter Spotlight: Layla Hirst

We’re sending a giant Candlelighters thank you to Layla Hirst for raising over £6,600 for Candlelighters by taking on an incredible challenge… running a non-stop loop of Pen-y-ghent in the Yorkshire Dales for a full 24 hours!

In 24 hours, Layla ran a staggering 100 kilometres and climbed nearly 17,000 feet!

This incredible challenge was inspired by her brother Aidan who sadly died aged 16 after being diagnosed with cancer. Aidan and his family were supported by Candlelighters throughout his treatment and Layla chose to fundraise to ensure other young people like Aidan and families like hers can continue to receive the support they need.

Layla said, “It was the most incredible 24 hours. The nighttime was the hardest part with a long 13-hour stretch of complete darkness, rain, and wind.”

“But I had Aidan in my mind every step of the way, and he got me through it. When the sun came up, it gave me a whole new lease of life and I just kept putting one foot in front of the other, enjoying the company of different friends that turned up to run with me – bringing with them new conversation and new snacks! Raising so much money was just incredible – and the least I could do for such an amazing charity that helped my brother and our

family in our darkest time.”

We’re so grateful for Layla’s amazing efforts to support families – what an achievement!
