When your child is in hospital, it can feel like the world has turned upside down. Every family’s journey is different, but here are some tips from our family support team that other parents and carers have found helpful: ✨ Get to know your hospital team ✨ Look after yourself ✨ Connect with other families ✨ Bring home comforts
The ward can feel overwhelming at first, with lots of new faces and routines to take in. Don’t be afraid to ask who’s who, or to check what’s happening next. The hospital staff are there to support your whole family. Our Family Support Team are also on hand if you’d like a friendly face and some guidance.
It’s easy to forget your own needs, but eating well, getting rest where you can, and accepting offers of help will give you strength for your child. Our Champions’ Pantry, Talking Therapies and wellbeing services are here to give you a boost too.
No one understands quite like another parent going through it too. Take time to say hello to others on the ward – those little conversations can make a big difference. We also run groups and events where you can meet other families who really ‘get it’.
✨ Stay connected
Being in hospital doesn’t mean life has to stop. Celebrate milestones, however small – from a smile to a birthday. Phone calls, video chats, and messages from loved ones can help you feel close, even when you’re apart.
A favourite blanket, toy, or pillow can make the hospital feel a little more like home. Small comforts can bring big reassurance for both you and your child.
