We’d like to introduce you to one of Candlelighters’ wonderful fundraising teams… Team George!
In 2013, Mark and Helen Gallimore’s lives changed overnight when their two-year-old son George was diagnosed with leukaemia. What began as a hospital visit for a suspected torn ligament turned into a devastating diagnosis, and George was rushed to Leeds Children’s Hospital to begin intensive treatment.
Mark remembers that time clearly: “The first week of treatment was a whirlwind, and the support from the doctors and nurses was incredible. And then we were introduced to Candlelighters – and that has started what will be the rest of my life fundraising for them.”
George’s treatment lasted three and a half years. He had chemotherapy daily, medication every four hours, and endured countless challenges, including nine bouts of shingles and numerous infections.
Thankfully, in November 2016, George was given the all-clear and now attends yearly check-ups as part of his long-term aftercare.
Through the ups and downs, the Gallimore family found strength not only in each other, but in a growing community of supporters. That’s how Team George was born.
Since 2014, Team George has raised over £43,000 for Candlelighters, and Mark has completed over 150 fundraising events – from abseiling down Ripley Castle, tackling the Yorkshire Six Peaks, walking barefoot across 15 feet of Lego, and even completing marathons.
“I’ve got a few personal favourite events,” says Mark. “Ben Nevis, my first Yorkshire Marathon, the London Marathon – and reaching my 2000th and now 3000th mile this April. After a long walk, we always celebrate with our tradition: sticky toffee pudding!”
Despite everything their family has been through, Mark and Helen are determined to give back. “Candlelighters’ support will never leave us, and we want to make a difference for other families – now and in the future,” says Mark. “The effect of childhood cancer stays with you forever.”
When asked about advice for other fundraisers, Mark says, “Don’t be shy to ask people for help, and always try to think of something different.”
And if he could plan a dream event? “Mount Everest!” he smiles.
We are so inspired by Team George. Their courage, strength and commitment to Candlelighters is something truly special. We’re so proud to have them as part of our community – and we can’t wait to see what challenge comes next!
