When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life changes for the whole family, and siblings are often left coping with a whirlwind of emotions on their own. While attention rightly centres on the child going through treatment, their brothers and sisters are facing their own challenges: fear, sadness, guilt and confusion. Routines are turned upside down, time with parents becomes limited, and the pressure to stay strong can feel overwhelming. At Candlelighters, we know how important it is to support the whole family, and that includes the incredible siblings who so often show strength beyond their years. That’s why we offer tailored support groups for siblings, whether their brother or sister is on treatment, has finished treatment, or has sadly died. Through opportunities to talk, connect with others, and take part in activities just for them, we aim to create a space where siblings feel understood, supported, and less alone. This month, we’re still glowing from our latest Sibling Residential at Lineham Farm in Leeds – a weekend full of laughter, connection, and unforgettable moments! Our super siblings enjoyed everything from meeting friendly farm animals and building dens in the woods, to swinging in hammocks and toasting marshmallows around the campfire. And the highlight? The return of Candlelighters’ Got Talent! If you know a sibling who might benefit from our support, or if your family would like to learn more, we’re here to help. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch and take a look at what groups and events are coming up here.
These weekends are about more than just fun, they’re a chance for siblings to be themselves, to make precious memories, and to feel less alone alongside others who truly understand.
Thank you to everyone who donates, fundraises, and champions our cause – you make this support possible.
