Meet Jake
When did you start volunteering?
January 2023
Why did you start volunteering with Candlelighters?
After being diagnosed with Lymphoma twice as a young adult, I developed a range of complicated physical health conditions which limited my ability to work. So, in January 2023, I decided to apply for the Fundraising Office Support voluntary position at Candlelighters to bolster my professional skillset. I chose Candlelighters because they are a local charity and from my own experiences with cancer, I had a deep appreciation of the level of support they provide for patients and their families.
Which area of Candlelighters do you volunteer in and what do you do day to day?
I volunteer one day per week in the fundraising department. My time is mostly spent supporting the fundraisers, I do this by… providing them with information about their upcoming events, sending them out relevant support materials in the post (Candlelighters t-shirts, collection tins, banners etc) and providing subsequent updates to the fundraising databases.
What has volunteering with Candlelighters done for you?
It has provided me with a range of transferable administrative skills along with a well-rounded knowledge of how a fundraising team operates.
What has your experience been like volunteering with Candlelighters?
It has been deeply rewarding knowing that the hours I put in contribute towards making cancer a little less difficult for young patients and their families! I would describe my experience as FUN – I have genuinely had so much fun volunteering in the fundraising office, it is a super friendly and positive environment to be a part of.
What do you do outside of volunteering?
I am in the process of launching a mindfulness meditation teaching business. In my spare time I like to go outdoors camping, hiking and just generally dwell amongst the trees and hills! I am also a huge music nerd, so I love to listen to and compose music.
Is there anything you would say to someone who wanted to start volunteering at Candlelighters?
It’s a super friendly and inclusive organisation so you are bound to enjoy yourself. I initially felt apprehensive about working in an office with no prior experience but the infrastructure they have in place to support volunteers is exceptional. I have learnt so much from my colleagues and they were always there to assist me and help if I was uncertain about anything.
What’s the best thing about volunteering?
Being in a positive environment each week with friendly people making a difference together.
Why do you think people should consider volunteering?
It is a great form of work experience / professional development, it is always uplifting, and I have developed great friendships with my fellow colleagues and volunteers.
