CW: Bereavement
In 2012 Claire’s son, Jaiden, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at just 20 months old. They spent six months in hospital while he underwent intensive treatment. While the treatment cleared Jaiden’s cancer, he developed pneumonia and sadly, died at just two years old.
Claire shares their story.
“Although his time with us was far too short, Jaiden packed so much love, laughter and happiness into those two years. He was such a bubbly little boy who absolutely loved music and playing the drums.

Some of our fondest memories from our time in hospital are of the play area, where he could simply be a little boy, forgetting for a while why he was there.
We also remember the wonderful music lady, whose sessions always brought smiles, and Elaine, (the Candlelighters Dinner Supervisor), who never failed to brighten our day. The consultants, nurses and every member of staff cared for Jaiden and our family with such compassion, kindness and dedication and we will never forget them,” Claire says.

“From the very first day of Jaiden’s diagnosis, Candlelighters were there for us. Their support didn’t end when we left the hospital and it has continued for almost 14 years. For that we will be forever grateful,” Claire says.
“Over the years, we have spent so much time at The Square, where I was able to access wellbeing sessions that helped me cope through some of the darkest days. The Candlelighters bus made it possible to access services closer to home, making support easier when travelling wasn’t always possible. The bereaved family groups have also been a huge source of comfort, surrounding us with people who truly understand what it means to lose a child.
The Day of Memories have become especially meaningful to our family. We have attended several over the years and they have given us a beautiful opportunity to remember Jaiden in such a special way. One of my proudest and most emotional moments was reading a poem in his memory. To have a place where Jaiden’s life is remembered, where his name is spoken and where we are surrounded by people who understand, means more than words could ever express.

Claire and her son, Kaine, at Diggerland
Most recently, it was wonderful to celebrate Candlelighters’ 50th anniversary at Diggerland Yorkshire. Seeing so many families together was a reminder of just how many lives Candlelighters has touched over the past five decades,” Claire continues.
“Over the years we have tried to give something back through fundraising, but the truth is we will always feel indebted to Candlelighters. No amount of fundraising could ever repay the kindness, compassion and unwavering support you have given our family. You have been there through the unimaginable and have continued to walk alongside us every step of the way.
It is hard to believe it has been almost 14 years since we lost Jaiden. Somehow, we have found a way to keep going, but I’m not sure we could have done that without Candlelighters. You have helped us not only through the hardest days of our lives but also to ensure that Jaiden’s memory continues to be celebrated and cherished.

Thank you for 50 years of standing beside children with cancer and their families. You will always hold a very special place in our hearts.”
Thank you so much for sharing your family’s story, Claire, we’re so glad we could be there to support you and your family and Candlelighters will always be here.
And thank you so much to everyone who so kindly continues to support Candlelighters so we can be there for families like Claire’s.
