What is CCAM?

CCAM takes place in September each year, with children’s cancer charities such as ourselves using the month as an opportunity to increase awareness of childhood cancer, as well as raise vital funds to support the work we do. Each year, around 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer and when a child receives a diagnosis, lives are turned upside down in an instant, not just for the child but for their parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and extended family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey – physically, emotionally and even financially. We provide financial, emotional and practical support to children and families affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire, from diagnosis and for as long as families need it.

Every September we look to turn Yorkshire GOLD in support of CCAM and this year is no different, with us running a variety of events and fundraising campaigns throughout the month. This includes our first ever large scale drone event, #WeAreOne; a chance for NHS staff, patients and supporters of Candlelighters to come together in one spectacular video; where we aim to capture the shape of the CCAM gold ribbon as one. In addition to this, we will also be working alongside NHS staff on the Oncology and Hematology Units at Leeds Children’s Hospital to plan a pirate themed gold treasure hunt on the ward for children and their families throughout the month.

As well as raising awareness, we will be raising vital funds. This includes a charity bucket collection on Saturday 21st of September in Leeds City Centre where our new charity mascot, Champ, will be sure to make an appearance. Whilst Champ stays firmly on the ground, daring fundraisers will take to the skies on 29 September for the Candlelighters CCAM Skydive. We are also excited to bring back our CCAM Golden Ticket fundraiser, where our supporters can buy a chocolate treat for £1 with a chance of finding a bronze, silver or gold ticket with fantastic prizes to be won.

Our Fundraising Manager Tom Robertshaw said, “September is such an important time of year for Candlelighters and we want to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with all the amazing things happening. We would also like to thank everyone who has signed up to get involved so far.”
