Supporter Richard Hunt is embarking on the Great North Swim Challenge on Saturday 10th June this year.

William

After months of training, he will be swimming a mile down Lake Windermere in Cumbria to raise funds for Candlelighters, in support of his friends’ son William who is currently on treatment.

Speaking to Candlelighters, Richard said: “I’m hoping to improve on my swim times and complete the swim in approximately 27 minutes to beat my personal best. This is the fourth time I’ve done the event. On the Sunday after the Saturday’s swim, I will then be doing a 5KM swim. On this day, my friend AJ has challenged me to complete the swim before he can cycle the perimeter of the lake.”

The Bank House Inn in Pudsey are supporting Richard too! They’ve very kindly agreed to sell one of their hand pull pints as a charity beer. They’ll be making a donation for each pint. Thank you to Bank House too!

Victoria, William’s mother, has kindly shared an update on William’s treatment:

“The most important news is that William has gone into remission! It is just so amazing and overwhelming. This is what the consultants hoped would happen within the first month of treatment, then he still has to have a further 4 rounds of chemotherapy to keep it away and then 2.5 years in maintenance, so still a long road for him.

The past few weeks have been really hard for William. The treatment takes it toll on their little bodies. He lost his hair, he was extremely bloated which was uncomfortable for him, and he pretty much lost the use of his legs due to pain, unusual sensations and loss of muscle mass. Thankfully he has come off the steroids and has had a little break from chemotherapy so he is recovering from these side effects at the moment.

We are still visiting the hospital every week for treatment and tests. He’s found this quite hard and upsetting at times but the staff and nurses having done their best to make it a more positive experience for him which has helped massively. This is good news because we will be visiting frequently over the next 3 years. “
