Since taking on Candlelighters as their charity of the school year, Queen Mary’s has held a number of fundraising events including a ‘wig Wednesday’ event, autumn fayre and Christmas concerts.
This February, Queen Mary’s students decided to support the charity by organising their own fashion show. Independent of their teachers (who were kept in the dark until dress rehearsals on the day!) the students in each of the four houses carefully planned their outfits and choreography to fit with the four chosen themes – “This Sporting Life”, “High Society”, “Back to the Future” and “Walk on the Wild Side”. The school then invited staff and parents to attend the fashion show event, leading to a packed out hall of excited attendees.
Sitting on the front row as a guest judge was our Community Fundraiser Chloe, who had the unenviable task of selecting the winning house with the help of Sophie Worthington, owner of the I Love Gorgeous children’s clothing brand. Following a very funny and clever show that featured everything from pupils dressed as golf balls, to scuba divers, to the whole royal family rocking out to the Queen playing guitar, the judges deliberated and selected Fountains as the winning house. Following a thunderous round of applause for the winning team Chloe was then invited on stage to receive a cheque for £1000 for Candlelighters – taking the school’s fundraising total to just over £2000!
Here at Candlelighters we would like to say a big thank you to all the students, staff and parents at Queen Mary’s who have supported and fundraised for Candlelighters so far. We’re excited to see what you come up with next!
