The Pig & Pastry on Bishopthorpe Road, York was established in 2008 by Julia and Steve Holding. It is a family run, neighbourhood café with a fun, buzzy atmosphere, full of delightful treats and named one of the “Best places to eat in York” by BBC Good Food magazine in 2017.

The menu includes breakfast, brunch, lunch, sandwiches, salads, daily specials, home baking and much more. They source local and seasonal ingredients where possible and use regular suppliers and producers from the Yorkshire region.

In 2015, they released a ‘The Pig & Pastry’ cookbook with the sole aim, to raise money for Candlelighters. It was so popular that it sold out in just 8 weeks, due to its popularity it was the reprinted in 2016.

All the profits from the book go directly to the charity and the Holding family have now raised over £20,000 to support families facing childhood cancer.

The cookbook could not have been possible without the incredible efforts of Karen Turner (Award Winning Food Photographer), Alexandra Vintilla (Designer) and Justine Brooks (Editor). These amazing ladies gave their valuable time and skills for free and thanks to this, the charity receives every penny of the sale after the cost to the publisher.

Candlelighters are a charity close to Julia and Steve’s hearts, they said: “Candlelighters were a huge help to us whilst our little girl undertook radiotherapy at St. James Hospital and chemotherapy and other surgery at Leeds General Infirmary. So, we really appreciate every single copy of the book that is bought.”
