Please be the spark that keeps our candle burning so we can bring light to families in these darkest of times.
Meet eight year old Leo. Leo was diagnosed in September 2019 with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Leo’s Mum said, ‘From day one, Leo has received continued support from the amazing Candlelighters team, on the ward, at clinic, at The Square and now during this pandemic at home via Zoom! Leo has been thoroughly enjoying the sessions, it gives him something to look forward to each week and for me as his Mum it is just so lovely to hear him chatting away to Emma and Vicky. They are so engaging and fun for him to chat to.
Shielding at home has been so hard for us all but more so Leo, keeping him entertained and upbeat is so important and he looks forward to his weekly bit of fun with the girls. Over the weeks he has made so many great pieces, his favourite is “The Gribbit”!
It is helping him to get his hands moving again and strengthen them with all the cutting out, sticking and gluing he’s been doing, it’s also making him think!
These sessions have definitely made an impact on him in a positive way and he can’t wait to meet Emma and Vicky in person, he was too poorly at the start of his treatment as an inpatient for many weeks so he didn’t get the chance to visit The Square before the lockdown hit. It will be great for him to finally get over there to meet in person once it is safe for him to do so.’

In the years since Candlelighters was formed, survival rates for children with cancer have greatly improved. But so far, little has been done to improve the experience of living through and beyond cancer.
