Services and Support for Families throughout Covid-19.

As you know, here at Candlelighters we are one big family. And like any family, we look after each other. Anyone touched by childhood cancer, no matter how long ago, is considered a member. Our job? To bring this family together and make sure each person can get the support they need.

Here is a list of our services explained below:

  • Talking Therapy
  • 1:1 Young Persons Support
  • Events & Group Activities
  • Check-Ins from our Family Support Team
  • Wellbeing & Relaxation
  • Peer Support Network
  • Support on the Wards & Clinic at Leeds Children’s Hospital

Talking Therapy: We understand that being affected by childhood cancer can be a confusing & upsetting time. Our Talking Therapists Paul, Liz & Jonathan offer private and confidential talking therapies, mindfulness and coaching sessions. These sessions are currently being delivered via Skype or Zoom and can be booked whenever is an appropriate time for you. If you or a member of your family feel they would really benefit from a face to face appointment then please get in touch with the team.

1:1 Young Persons Support: Whether you have a child on treatment, post-treatment or a sibling, we have a trained talking therapist specifically for them. Sarah is our Talking Therapist specifically trained to work with children, to help them understand and cope with their situation. These sessions are delivered via Skype or Zoom and can be booked whenever is an appropriate time for your child. We’re also able to offer essential face to face appointments, as the current guidelines allow us to do so.

Events & Group Activities: Candlelighters is a big family and like any family, we like to get together, so we organise a number of events for all the family. We’re currently offering these events virtually via Zoom. However, some of our events can now be held at The Square, such as our bereavement support groups. The new guidance states that support groups such as this can still continue to run under the new restrictions.

Here’s a list of upcoming events for patients, siblings, mums, dads and grandparents!

Check-Ins from our Family Support Team: We offer regular check-ins for families. You can let us know if you’d like to have chat over the phone to one of our team. This can be as regularly as you wish, every day, every other day, once a week or once a month.

Virtual Wellbeing & Relaxation: Fancy some time all about you? Our trained Wellbeing Therapists can deliver 1:1 virtual relaxation sessions, designed to relax your mind and body. They provide a chance to have some time out, learn relaxation and self-massage techniques to help you de-stress at this time.

We also have a Movement for Positivity and Yoga Session. This is a virtual group session held on Wednesday evenings – 19:30 – 20:30.

Peer Support Network: Family Network Groups connect family members and past patients who’ve been affected by childhood cancer from across Yorkshire. Whether sharing stories, coping strategies or simply having some time out, Family Network Groups are a great opportunity to connect with others who ‘Get it’. Some groups are held virtually and some physically at The Square, depending on the guidance given by the government.
