Yorkshire accountancy firm Garbutt + Elliott has raised a joint total of £11,000 for Candlelighters and York Mind, the firm’s two nominated charities for the past year.

Each charity has received a £5,500 donation from Garbutt + Elliott after employees from across the firm’s York and Leeds offices undertook a series of fundraising events over the past 12 months. The various events included a cake bake, dress-down days, quizzes, the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ and both the Leeds and York 10K races.

Candlelighters is dedicated to providing practical, financial and emotional support to children and their families affected by cancer in Yorkshire, whilst York Mind is an independent provider of high quality mental health services in York and its surrounding area.

Kate Goldring, fundraising manager at Candlelighters, said: “We’re extremely grateful to the team at Garbutt + Elliott for raising such a large amount of money for our charity, which will allow us to not only support the families of children suffering with cancer, but also to invest in research into this dreadful disease. I know every level of the company got involved in fundraising and they did it with a big smile and lot of dedication. I would like to thank all our friends at Garbutt + Elliott for making this year the huge success it was.”

The charity, which recently opened The Square, a family support centre for anyone who has been affected by children’s cancer across Yorkshire, is run by the parents of cancer patients and the medical staff who treat them. Candlelighters is proud to invest heavily in research, deliver family support and also offer financial support to the children’s oncology wards at Leeds General Infirmary by funding roles and equipment.

Holly Pollard, community fundraiser at York Mind, said: “We’re very appreciative of the fantastic support Garbutt + Elliott has provided over the last year. As a small local charity, this is a very significant amount of money which will help us make a positive difference to the lives of those in York experiencing mental ill-health. It has been a pleasure to work together with colleagues from Garbutt + Elliott and we thank all colleagues for their hard work and commitment towards better mental health”.

York Mind aims to empower individuals experiencing mental ill health to start on the pathway to recovery. The charity was formed in 2011 through the merger of the local mental health charities York & District Mind and Our Celebration.

Nigel Shaw, partner and head of corporate social responsibility at Garbutt + Elliott, said: “It has been our pleasure to have supported Candlelighters and York Mind this year. Our people really engaged with all of the charitable activities we undertook. In particular, we enjoyed the Leeds and York 10Ks, with more than 40 employees taking part.

“The funds raised will continue to help people benefit from the excellent work that both charities carry out. The fact that both help families and individuals from across Yorkshire also means the money’s uses are highly visible, which is very satisfying for us.”

These donations form part of Garbutt + Elliott’s wider corporate social responsibility activity, which includes over £25,000 of work carried out pro bono for charity clients.

Working predominantly with growing and entrepreneurial owner-managed businesses based throughout Yorkshire, Garbutt + Elliott operates across a diverse range of sectors including retail, manufacturing, food, brewing, creative arts, digital media, property, construction, horseracing, charities and not-for-profit. Over the course of the past 12 months, the firm has acquired more than 300 new clients.

Current Garbutt + Elliott clients include York Racecourse, Bill Plant Driving School, Thai restaurant chain Chaophraya, and concrete block and block paving manufacturer Plasmor.
