The team at Candlelighters @ The Square will be running the first Bereaved Siblings Group day of 2017 this Saturday (14th January) from 10:30am-2:30pm.
The Square, based by Leeds Children’s Hospital, opened in February 2015 and provides a quiet place for anyone affected by cancer to come and sit, have a therapy or get involved in one of the support groups. From grandparents, to mums, dads and siblings, the team run various types of activities for each group.
The Bereaved Siblings Group, specifically, is ran by Family Support Manager Natalie Kisby, after being established in March 2016. She said: “The group is so important for the kids because they are able to build friendships with other children in similar situations to themselves, whilst also having as much fun as possible!”
The group has previously visited Gravity Trampoline Park, Xscape Theme Park, Flamingo Land, Scarborough and Chill Factore Indoor Skiing and Snowboarding Centre. This Saturday, children from the group will be spending the day at The Square creating exciting melted crayon art canvases. After a picnic-style lunch, there will be more fun activities. During this time, there will be a chance to work on their ‘Butterfly Project’. Each time a sibling comes to the group, they are given the chance to make a colourful paper butterfly, so each visit sees a new butterfly added to a beautiful make shift cocoon!
Have you been affected by children’s cancer and would like to get involved in one of our groups? If so, don’t hesitate to contact The Square on 0113 887 8333. There are still places available for the Bereaved Siblings Group on Saturday! Do let us know if you would like to book a space.
