Bedale High School Students Take on the Ultimate Coast to Coast Cycle Ride
(50 ) Students, Arnside to Scarborough, 3 days!!!
On the 9th July 2019 Mr Sellers and 50 students along with family members took on the 150 mile journey from Arnside to Scarborough in aid of Candlelighter’s. Their fundraising inspiration came from one of their students who was sadly diagnosed with cancer in April 2018.
10 of the students had taken part in the annual Coast to Coast event on numerous occasions. The students managed to raise an absolutely phenomenal £4956.54 which is their highest total to date!
Candlelighters support children and families across Yorkshire who are affected by children’s cancer. Sadly on average 150 children are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire each year. Candlelighters offer financial, emotional and practical support for the child and their entire family as well as funding staff, equipment and research at the children’s oncology centre at the Leeds Children’s Hospital.
Chloe, Community Fundraiser from Candlelighters, said “We are so grateful for the effort of the students, parents and teachers from Bedale High School. The money and awareness they have raised will make a massive difference to children and families, including those in North Yorkshire who are affected by childhood cancer. Their donation could fund 4 holidays for entire families to spend much needed quality time together or a weekend residential trip for siblings who have a brother or sister on treatment and also those who have sadly lost their brother or sister. From myself and our children and families I would like to say a massive thank you for your support. We wouldn’t be able to continue to offer the support we do without help from amazing people like yourselves”
Mr Sellers from Bedale High school said “This was an amazing event that saw the challenge only increased with the poor weather on day 1 – all had to dig deep and show their true resilience – their perseverance paid off by day 2 and 3: a truly fantastic effort and achievement. It is true that cycling is good for your health – but it’s not just the fresh air and the exercise. Cycling is good for your mental state of mind – it brings people together to struggle and share the highs and lows, the ups and downs. It helps communities build together, it strengthens friendships and this time it has raised money and awareness for a truly great charity.
