When a child is diagnosed with cancer, a holiday can seem like the least of a family’s worries. As well as the stress and pressures of looking after a very poorly child, many parents will be forced to give up work, meaning finances can also become strained. But this is when they need a holiday the most – to spend time together, away from all this stress and strain, and make happy memories together.

Your donation could bring some smiles to a family going through childhood cancer.

Because of your kind support, around 140 families are able to go on a fully-funded Candlelighters holiday each year. These respite holidays give families precious time together when they need it most, and time away from the day-to-day difficulties of cancer, making memories that will last a lifetime.

One family who has benefitted from a Candlelighters holiday is six-year-old Mia’s family from Huddersfield. Mia was diagnosed with leukaemia at just four years old in 2020, turning the family’s world upside down in an instant. Your kind donations meant we could fund a much-needed holiday for Mia, her mum Naomi, dad Jake, and Mia’s grandad to Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest in May 2021, just after the most intensive period of her treatment.

Naomi and Jake said, “Our Candlelighters holiday was one of our best experiences as a family. We’d just finished the most difficult stage of Mia’s treatment. Mia had been so poorly and we’d been so worried, so having a holiday to look forward to was a huge support to all of us. We felt we could shut away the outside world and just treasure being together as a family. Mia was just able to be a child again, which was priceless .”
