Saving more children and their families from the devastating consequences of cancer depends on continuous research.
When Candlelighters was formed in 1971, sadly very few of the children survived, but today things are different. Research and medicine has advanced so much over the years that now more than 70 per cent of children go on to lead normal, healthy lives.
In addition to our Candlelighters Children’s Cancer Research Laboratory in Leeds, we also help fund external research projects across Yorkshire.
The Candlelighters Children’s Cancer Research Laboratory opened in 1992, as a result of a huge fundraising campaign. Led by Professor Sue Burchill, the laboratory now enjoys an international reputation, particularly for research into Ewings Sarcoma. It also attracts funding from other research bodies.
In among the research we’ve helped fund are:
- * Fertility research projects
* Brain tumour research projects
* Research into symptom prevalence and profiles in childhood cancer and leukaemia
* Development of the Yorkshire Specialist Register of cancer and leukaemia in children and young adults.
* Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia projects
We usually release funds for new research projects every year. The application process is rightly rigorous – we need to know that the money is going to the right place and we need to be sure of the scientific merit of each application.
The following people sit on the Candlelighters External Scientific Review Committee:
- Professor C C Bailey
Professor R Grundy
Professor C F Inglehearn (Chair)
Dr T Littlewood
Dr A Michalski
Professor Sir A Markham
Professor J Milner
Dr M Murphy
Professor I Roberts
Professor N Thakker
Professor A J Vora
Due to the relocation of the Unit in 2010 and The Big Move Appeal, we did not releae new funds for external research projects last year. However researchers should submit their details via our research application form so that we can notify them when funds become available later in 2011.
